I can provide Matching support for CEA and GFO-20-303

California Energy Alliance (CEA) seeks your support for an important grant funding opportunity (GFO-20-303) we are pursuing as the lead with partners University of California, Davis (California Lighting Technology Center) and University of California, Irvine (CALPLUG).

Have an Impact on California Energy Research
This project is important to support because the Energy Commission is seeking to fund applied research and technology demonstration projects in order to advance innovative technologies for controlling plug load energy use. Plug loads are one of the fastest growing categories of energy use in residential and commercial buildings in California, and are not currently typically monitored or controlled. Your support of this research will ultimately have a tangible impact on how we implement future demand management and grid modernization strategies in California.

About GFO-20-303
CEA is serving as the lead in the Group 1 part of this opportunity: Analyze and Test Total Energy Consumption of Plug Load Devices to Support California Codes and Standards for Non-covered Products. The objectives for Group 1 are: 1) to identify unregulated plug load devices commonly used in residential and commercial buildings in order to quantify their energy use and potential savings from efficiency standards, and 2) make recommendations for future state efficiency standards.

Expected plug load devices types that will be evaluated include but are not limited to: residential network equipment, commercial network equipment, residential and commercial computers, commercial laboratory equipment, other common commercial office equipment such as printers, fax machines, etc.

How You Can Help
The project is expected to span three years, and work will start in March 2021. The total funding allocated is $1,000,000. CEA is looking to secure at least 10% of that in match funding, or $100,000. More is welcome and will give us more points in the CEC’s scoring process for proposals, and also allow us to test more products – this will positively impact our recommendations.

Cash donations are preferred, and products, in-kind services, and labor may also be considered if they align with project scope. Match funding commitment must be documented in a letter by the provider and submitted with our proposal, which is due October 5. Letters must be received at CEA by September 25.

About CEA
CEA is the only energy advocacy organization to have its code change proposals adopted as part of recent California Energy Standards updates. CEA's proposals are self-funded and developed by members in collaboration with interested public participants, industry experts, and the people working every day in California buildings. CEA has a solid track record with funding, including from the Energy Foundation to develop energy conservation measures for 2022 Energy Standards, and from NECA/IBEW to support development of outcome based code.
